A double standard, then?

[He gives a low grumble as he turns down the alley.]

Just because I don't have powers or anything doesn't mean I don't know how to take care of myself. Yeah, I've gone and done some stupid things before, but I always made it. How is this any different?

It's not any different, but they're always going to react like that because you aren't them. You and Rubedo did something similar to Jenny when she came back from tangling with Rip.

[A sigh escapes him, and he all but deflates, his frustration leaving him.]

It's not because you're an unaugmented human. Rubedo and Jenny will act like this towards you, you and Rubedo will act like this towards Jenny, and you and Jenny will act like this towards Rubedo.

What they don't realize is that you're all very similar in that respect, and similar in the fact that you get horrible cabin fever if locked in a room.

That first week I was back wasn't so bad. I could come and go as I pleased, but I figured they wanted me close, so I stayed. But when I'm forced to stay in one place like now...

[He shudders, though he tries to hide it by shifting his bag onto the other shoulder.]

Reminds me too much of the several prison cells I got thrown in.

Anything can be a prison cell. [This was simply said, but full of understanding]

[Duo is going to glance up at Gaignun and smile slightly before cutting a corner onto an open street.]

The different foster homes were like that. The church, too, at first. Hell, even the Sweeper group before I finally figured out what I was going to be doing with Deathscythe.

Thankfully, I believe good behavior will earn you an early release.

I'll just have to keep myself busy until then!

[He shuffles his bag some with a grin.]

Besides, I need to get out soon. I have a special project I need to finish up, and I can't do it at the house.

Oh? What is it?

A surprise. For everyone.

[Yup, that's all you're getting out of him.]

[He's just going to chuckle at that] I see. Well, I'm sure by the time you wish to work on it things will have cooled down some.

I actually had planned to do this for Christmas, but then we all got put in Candyland, then the dreams and...it just fell by the wayside.

[His steps seem to quicken as the house comes into view.]

Lucky me, I have a co-conspirator, else I wouldn't be able to pull this off!

Many things got waylaid in those few weeks. I hope they take it easy on us for a while to make up for it.

And treasure your allies. They make all the difference.

[Duo spins around to face Gaignun, his duffel bag causing his balance to falter though he manages to catch himself, and he winks, giving a two finger salute.]

Yes, Sir!

[Seems like someone is feeling better! Fresh air as a cure for cabin fever...who knew?! With a laugh, Duo turns back around just in time to grab the door knob and throw the door open. He looks as though he is going to call out to whoever is home, but he stops himself and simply makes his way to the stairs.]

And I didn't even try to run away. Aren't I such a good prisoner?

[Another wink and he stops on the stairs to offer Gaignun a grateful smile.]

Seriously, that's the best I've felt since I got back. You know, all things considering. I really do owe you one for that.

[Duo was a strange person, but Gaignun was growing to like the little guy that had stolen a bit of his brother's heart.]

A model prisoner, perhaps they'll upgrade you to a job in the library. [At Duo's next words, Gaignun shook his head.]

You don't owe me anything, I'm just glad I could help.

Nope! You helped me out, so I have to repay you. Who knows? Maybe you will barely notice it. I can be a very sneaky guy when I put my mind to it and that white rat ain't around.

I don't know, the last time you tried to be sneaky it backfired on you. [He's teasing now]

Hey! It's not my fault that the damn thing is the same color as the lining on my coat!

[Nope, he is never going to live that down, and he knows it. That's why he's huffing and folding his arms over his chest.]

Honestly, if it weren't for him, I'd have at least managed to get out before anyone saw me. Even if it meant leaving my stuff behind again.

Maybe you should be grateful to him. If Rubedo had found out that you'd been in and out so quickly, there would have been a much greater fall out. I'd say because of Alby you got off easy.

Yeah yeah, I know. It's hard to break a habit that essentially became the one thing that kept you alive.

[He shrugs, though he still smiles.]

Besides, picking locks is actually kind of fun. The more challenging, the better. And with Gundanium wire, you don't have to worry about your picks breaking.

Believe me, I know how hard it is to break those kinds of habits.

[He is, however, not going to argue with the fact that picking locks can be fun. While he barely remembers how to do it, he figures his fingers could still work the tools if he ever found the kind he was familiar with again.]

It's why I carry a gun with me just about any time I leave the house. And the wire in my hair. If I'm captured, even without my gun, I can still get out because who the hell is going to risk touching my hair to take the wire or bomb I have stored there?

Well, I suppose no one ever really thinks to look there. [Though now he's imagining someone sticking a metal detector to Duo's head and he's having a hard time not laughing at the mental image.]

[Duo cants his head slightly, his shoulders lifting in a slight shrug.]

It just goes to show how lucky I am. I wouldn't have survived if anyone did search me.

[He lifts a hand to wave at Gaignun as he begins his ascent.]

I think I'm going to get to work. Thanks again.
